Friday

Republicans came close to a narrow majority in the US House of Representatives on Wednesday, while control of the Senate depends on the tight races in Georgia, Nevada and Arizona, where votes are still being counted. The results so far defied the expectations of a sweeping win for the Republican Party amid frustrations over surging inflation under President Biden.

Utility company Enel is weighing asset sales outside Italy to reduce its debt and finance new investments, according to Bloomberg sources, and will unveil its new strategy later this month. Italy’s largest utility, which cut its profit target for 2022 in the wake of the energy crisis, had a record €69.7 billion of debt as of the end of September and aims to cut it to €58-62 billion by the end of this year.

Wednesday

Adidas appointed former Puma chief executive Bjorn Gulden as its next CEO as the company seeks to move on from a crisis over its partnership with rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye. Adidas shares rose as much as 4.8% and closed 2.9% higher in Frankfurt.

  • A step back: Current chief Kasper Rorsted will step down Friday, earlier than expected, after Adidas terminated the Yeezy venture. Even after a surge following news that Adidas and Gulden were speaking, the stock is down about 25% during Rorsted’s six-year tenure.

‘A natural and right step’

MHP leader Bahçeli commented on the AKP’'s HDP visit with these words.

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, in perhaps the most awaited group meeting speech in a long time, described the visit of the AKP delegation to HDP on the constitutional amendment as ‘a natural and right step.’ In the relevant part of his speech, what Bahçeli said is as follows:

‘Why did they meet with the HDP? What will we say, and how will we react to this? These are the hypothetical questions whose answers have been sought for days. I don't even need to repeat how we look at the HDP. It is a devastating and mischievous attitude for those who don't make a sound about the AKP delegation's contact with the CHP to talk about the HDP on our backs. In our eyes, the CHP is the same as the HDP. We do not look at what was discussed, we look at how a reasonable and democratic solution will be found.’

COP27 Finance: Transforming ambitions into credible actions

Written by Phuong Gomard, Mazars USA, Sustainable Finance Leader

One of the key features of COP26 was recognition that the scale and speed of the changes needed to transition to a more sustainable economy require all forms of finance. Public finance to develop infrastructure to transition to a greener and more climate-resilient economy, and private finance to fund technology, innovation, research, and sustainable business models.

As a result, last year’s COP confirmed the launch of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) to improve commitment to net-zero ambitions and establish a forum for addressing sector-wide challenges associated with the transition. As we head into COP27, GFANZ now has more than 550 members from over 50 countries and has developed a voluntary set of recommendations and framework for financial institutions looking to establish net-zero strategies, as well as guidance on how to increase the mobilisation of finance.

So, what has the finance sector learned over the last 12 months, and how can COP27 galvanise the finance sector to progress even further?

Developing specific pathways and targets

One thing that has become clear over the past 12 months is that in terms of developing pathways, setting targets and aligning portfolios, a bank needs to consider different aspects to, for example, an insurance company or an institutional investor. While pledges to the net-zero transition and the mobilisation of finance are increasing, delivery is being slowed down by the need for more tailored and customised guidance that answers the concerns of individual players within the finance sector. This challenge to develop more specific pathways and advice is one that GFANZ, amongst other alliances and working groups, is working on so that the finance sector’s ability to meet sustainable targets gains momentum.

From DALL-E 2 to Midjourney: The rise of the AI technology that visualises the text

It would be right to say that 2021 and 2022 have been the year of ‘artificial intelligence’. From chatbots to their function in recruitment processes, especially for the last 2 years, we have frequently heard about artificial intelligence technologies and it looks like we will be hearing more. However, there is this one specific area where artificial intelligence is used and it draws the attention of not only tech lovers, but also everybody else. You said it! We are talking about artificial intelligence technology that turns text into images.

So what are the primary artificial intelligence bots that turn text into an image?

DALL-E 2

We think that the first name to pop up in most of our minds when we hear ‘the AI that visualises the text’ is the same: DALL-E 2 is the artificial intelligence technology from AI research lab OpenAI whose cofounder is Elon Musk.

LONDON TOWN

Aposto London is a weekly, practical zine to London for those who want to make this city their neighbourhood.

An Arbitrary Guide (To London Yoga Studios)

Words by Sinem Er

I think London combines inspiring, agitating and worrisome moments, but in general, the city inspires me and kindles my creative fire. When we practice in nature, we benefit from the calming effect the earth, sea, sky and wind have on our nervous system. But I think this is possible in the city too. The challenges of the metropol can be seen as an opportunity to expand our comfort zone. I say this as a yoga teacher and student. Being able to flow with the changes, staying curious and having resilience in a city like London is invaluable. We can learn this through practice and if we experience life with an unbiased mind, then the city, the crowd, and the noise can become our friends, too. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to help people with that.

Yoga on the Lane, Shacklewell Lane: Yoga on the Lane has a non-competitive approach to a vinyasa practice. A fantastic place of community to get together to move mindfully, relax and restore. Naomi has a deeply compassionate style of teaching that is therapeutic and uplifting. Must experience! Also, in their shop, you can find a wide selection of aromatherapy products, yoga-related designer goodies and books.

Yogahome, Allen Road, Stoke Newington: It’s a really friendly, relaxed and down-to-earth centre. They have a wide selection of classes and experienced teachers. A plant-filled courtyard and two studios are tucked away behind a blue door. A former printing workshop retaining original features, the space has great charm and character.
