Behind Netflix’s “Instadocs” series lies a strategic framework that is very different from the usual reflexes of documentary-making, one built on speed, global panic and moments of cultural rupture. Shooting, editing and releasing a classic Netflix documentary usually takes 1 to 3 years. The first rule of the Instadocs framework, by contrast, is to be on screen within two or three months at most, before the story loses its heat. With the documentary on the AI-driven cyberattack of July 2026 released in October, viewers can watch an in-depth account of a subject they have been following, and wondering about, in the news.

Produced by Josh Tyrangiel and Connor Schell, with Steve Yaccino as showrunner, the series aims to fill the gap between long-form documentary and real-time journalism, and with the episodes Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted, The Prediction Games, The Decoy Plane and AI Gone Wild it has focused on current crises of justice, reality, security and technology.
