What does Istanbul mean to you as a poet?I have an intermittent/passionate relationship with Istanbul. I have tried many times to leave, to live in another city. London, New York, Athens, Crete, Florence, Aleppo before the war... I come back to Istanbul every time. There is a mysterious bond between us that I cannot and do not want to solve. I am not writing the poetry of Istanbul. Its effect on me has more to do with the historical, mystical depth, and openness I feel here than with the poetry I write. Istanbul has a depth that soothes my soul and I think I return here every time I succumb to this allure.Istanbul is also a city that feels very contradictory. On the one hand, I feel like a foreigner here. How does poetry stand against other disciplines in the biennial and how does it integrate into this common space?The invitation made by Amar Kanwar, one of the curators of the Biennial, with the idea of "letting poets tell us about the issues of the times" was very important. The idea of giving poetry such a space in the most experimental field of contemporary art such as the Biennial offers an interesting experience in terms of the targeted interaction. Including words/poetry written in the language of this geography in the Biennial, space is not only a brave decision but also a reminder of what contemporary art actually is. We will all experience it and see how it goes.What I find important here is to be open to interaction and for the poet to stand on an idea that will make room for this interaction. Because when you see poetry in a completely abstract, glorified place, you destroy this opportunity for interaction. In other words, this invitation can be an opportunity for the poet who speaks the language of truth, but it can also be a trap for the poet who sees themselves on the level of God!Can you share with us the process of your poems in the Biennial?Saying yes to the Biennial's invitation both excited and worried me. I have never written any of my poems because someone asked me to, and I wasn't about to start being commissioned now. But there was a big space offered to all poets and the connotations of that space, and I have to admit that I learned a lot about myself and my view of poetry from this process and work. &nbsp;I must say that at the beginning I found it difficult to move forward. That's why I wrote a small poem of 3 lines that I wanted to present with a video. It's called 'forbidden language.'In the video, in a remote village, in the middle of the desolation, we gather with the little girls who live there and we try to create a timbre, an echo by hitting the rock on which we sit with a stone in our hands. I don't know yet how it will be presented at the biennial, but I think this short poem and video is my most meaningful contribution to the spirit of the biennial.The other eleven poems are dedicated to the issue of migration, femicides, and Osman Kavala, to my friend Bei Dao, the dissident poet of China, to my friend Deniz Bilgin, a fairy in eternity, whose painting 'madonna and child was in the exhibition of women painters at the Meşher. I even have a poem about Perseverance's journey on Mars!&nbsp;

In fact, you are part of this melting pot in that you, together with Paul Osterlund and Parham A.G., formed a band called AŞK. How do you evaluate the current array of music coming from Istanbul?Istanbul has an incredibly vibrant music scene. When politics get me depressed, I try to maintain my optimism by thinking about the immense creativity coming out of the city. There are a lot of world-class musicians putting out unique music in a wide variety of genres. It’s exciting for me to see how some of these groups are also getting global recognition. For example, the darkwave band She Past Away is able to tour all over North America. They’re also very popular in Mexico and I’ve heard stories about fans there singing along to their songs at concerts in Turkish!The fact that bands doing this have been able to gain some global recognition is inspiring to me. It’s difficult for bands from a country like Turkey to break into the global market because people expect you to do something locally inspired rather than just playing straight ahead synth-pop or darkwave or surf rock, or whatever. I am sure the book will shed light on many musicians as well as bands that we have not much heard about when we think of Anatolian rock!I think we’re living in an ideal moment for research on Anatolian Rock. The genre began in the 1960s when musicians in Turkey began combining rock music with local folk music traditions and instruments like the bağlama. But interestingly, this genre is today experiencing a revival.At heart, my book explores what relationship this musical explosion of Turkey’s 1960s and 1970s had with the protest movements that also shaped this period, both in Turkey and across the world. My book follows the development of Anatolian Rock through the music of trailblazer Tülay German, the trippy ensemble Moğollar, the musically experimental and politically ambiguous Erkin Koray and Barış Manço, and the militant Selda Bağcan and Cem Karaca. I show that Anatolian Rock musicians had strong ties to 60s left-wing movements from the genre’s very first days, when jazz singer Tülay German collaborated with prominent socialists like Ruhi Su and Erdem Buri to kick off a craze of adapting Turkish folk songs to Western popular music. While radicals and rockers were sometimes engaged in different pursuits, I argue that they must still be thought of as two sections of the same movement of the 60s.And lastly, we'd love to read/hear your selections of Anatolian rock tunes that you became aware of during your research for the book project. Moreover, there is also a huge inn dating back to the Seljuk period.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Çatalhöyük: One of the first settlements in Anatolia. It is an example of a city belonging to the first period when humanity started to adopt a fixed life. A great stop for archaeology enthusiasts.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">&nbsp;Ihlara Valley: A spot that will satisfy both hikers and history buffs. A great hiking route and interesting Byzantine churches make it a good option.</li></ul>
