First, a celebration: Happy 100th birthday to classical and electronic music composer İlham Usmanbaş. I know – every text I write lately somehow connects to Ayvalık, the beauty I remember somehow relates to Ayvalık, and every knot somehow gets untied in Ayvalık. We are at Başka Sinema Ayvalık Film Festival, an event in the garden of Onbeş Ayvalık.Pizzas and wine are both very nice. So is the weather. From the distance, I see Nisan with the Bir Nefes Daha&nbsp;team by her side. We meet – I tell her how much I love the movie, and talk a little bit about Discovery Cinema. Nisan says she likes this new idea of discovery journey, agrees to guest on an episode, and adds: “I live in Moda too, we will meet somewhere in the streets of Moda.”One step back: November 2014, exactly 7 years ago. Başka Sinema celebrates its first anniversary, and one of the films at the showing is Across the Sea (“Deniz Seviyesi.”)&nbsp;Without knowing anything about it, I go to the theatre because I have the time. I have always liked tension, confrontation, and reckoning between characters. Having not been able to come back to Turkey in months, I greatly enjoy watching Turkey productions I can access.When I receive a teaser for Nisan Dağ’s When I'm Done Dying (“Bir Nefes Daha”), which earned her a Best Director award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival,&nbsp;I get a chance to watch it. First, I realize that Nisan Dağ is one of the directors of Across the Sea, which I had seen years ago. Then, I am filled with hope thanks to the film’s original rap songs, and that old familiar phrase: “It will, it will; Everything will be very good!”First meeting: She keeps the promise we made in Ayvalık, and we meet somewhere in the streets of Moda. Right after Ayvalık, When I’m Done Dying returned from Adana with awards, and met a lot more people at the box office last week.Nisan keeps attending festival after festival, she says a few days ago she was competing in Lecce, and that she is about to go to Tallinn as a jury. Obviously, everything keeps being very good. A record store in the side streets, a colorful cafe in a street off the road, a mural that she loves, a neighborhood shop she frequents (but forgot to buy mastic jam from the other day) – a treasure hunt.Everything shall be very good.

Discovering Nisan:&nbsp;“I can’t recall the first film I watched, which makes me sad. My memory is very weak, lack of memory is a bad wound of mine,”&nbsp;says Nisan Dağ. She said cinema was like magic to her. She recalls watching Tim Burton’s scary yet emotional characters or watching Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) for example.When she was younger, she loved the fantastic and surreal elements in cinema, or the things wherein we can somehow feel the magic: “Somewhere inside of it says, I hope that fantastic world will never disappear. Maybe the animation scenes in When I’m Done Dying are the manifestation of movie magic still inside me.”From the seaside to the slums: She shot her first feature film, Across the Sea (2014), with her classmate Esra Saydam from Columbia University in Ayvalık where her summer house is located. In the movie, Damla had moved to New York 8 years prior without informing her ex-lover, and when she returns to her summer house years later, a confrontation awaits her. Secrets are revealed. We are talking about the similarity of the relationship dynamics in the two films in terms of class conflict, the change in plans and the turning of life goals into disappointments.Exploring with Nisan: She suggests talking about Eliza Hittman's cinema, which tells stories of self-discovery set in New York, and more often in Brooklyn. She says that she doesn’t get as close to the characters at Hittman because the camera becomes similar to a gun, “But if you constantly detonate that gun, it will reduce the impact of a story-heavy job.”I enjoyed this part of Discovery Film, comparing films of the two directors, the relationships we established with each other, and the details that we made each other aware of. Nisan continues to build her own cinema, expand her own planet like Eliza Hittman. From movie magic to cinematic encounters

Seeing musicians happy on stage makes me happy as an audience member. Being a part of people’s moments of joy as they are enjoying playing their instrument makes my already existing positive feelings of being at a concert even stronger. Rana Uludağ’s energy goes beyond the stage. Growing music, growing with music

First sounds:&nbsp;One of&nbsp;Discovery Stage’s traditional curiosities is about the music that was played at home, the first sounds that were burned into the memory. Rana’s home growing up was a joyful one with lots of guests, events, and parties. The chatter in the house overwhelmed the music. But the long road trips in the car with the whole family are where the music took the lead. Her memories include Simon &amp; Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Joan Baez, The Beatles, and Kenny Rogers. Pots, pans, tables… She hits whatever she can find. For a couple of months, she takes darbuka classes from a Boğaziçi University student. Noticing that she gets bored in piano class, her mother guides her toward the drums and she starts her drumming adventure in the 6th grade. Her instructor’s path follows jazz. She studies percussions with Engin Gürkey whom she met while playing in the school band. She regularly performs at Nardis and Jolly Joker with her teachers. They meet in the studio above the bread bakery across from Peyote. “These kids are covered in tattoos,” Rana recalls thinking, “So cool.” There’s activity in the street as they are leaving rehearsal. People are starting to chant. The music they just made and the excitement of the crowd mix together. Even though it is an appealing place with endless potential, especially for someone in the music industry, Rana’s heart is where she gets to perform with Palmiyeler. “Being on stage in Turkey is a strong enough feeling to keep me here,” she says. Seeing her on stage is especially important for young women who want to do music.As a woman who had to work way more than male musicians to prove herself from the very first years when she started drumming, for Rana it is priceless when 18–19-year-old women come up to her after a concert and say they started drumming, or that they want to. She feels a responsibility. Whenever I see the future under a cloud of dust, my desire to create gets triggered. My priority becomes going for the things I believe will be permanent. During the pandemic, I started Discovery Stage in order to spend time with artists who were far away (and who are even further away now), to surrender to their creations, and make imaginary friends. I wanted to leave where I was, and gain my freedom through writing. Therefore, I evaluated not only their creations but our ability to sit together and be open to sharing. The rest was carried out by text, phone call, or e-mail. This applies to İdil Meşe too. We talked over the phone on a Tuesday, met up in a soup restaurant in Kadıköy the next Wednesday, and recorded our conversation in Aposto Studio in Galata on Thursday.In front of me, there is someone who, instead of centralizing music in her life, wants to play with it, discover it, have fun, and who sometimes likes to feel alone, and other times, as part of a crowd. She is someone who prioritizes “Vibrating differently with different people.”&nbsp;What İdil brings to the table never fully belongs to her. These are all pieces that come out of a cluster of voices and get mixed up in İdil. It’s not clear where it comes from, or where it’s going. Therefore, İdil’s music appears suddenly when you call out to or take a step toward it. Vibrating differently with different people

Sounds of the sea:&nbsp;I like to go all the way to the beginning. It is exciting to look at today when the starting point is always changing. When I ask İdil what is the first sound she recalls, first she said her memory isn’t so strong, then immediately replied, the sound of the sea.All of a sudden, she remembered the days she spent in Soros as a child with her family. When she speaks of her love of the sea, some sounds wash up ashore. When she wanted to add music to those times, she recalled a friend of her fathers who lived in İzmir, and his cabinets filled with records and CDs – and Jimi Hendrix’s Experience album with its four CDs and purple cover. İdil found her parents’ wish for her to learn to play the piano boring because of her distractibility, which she describes as “free confusion.” She always followed the fun.It didn’t take long before İdil crossed paths with a guitar while growing up listening to cult names. She learned to play the guitar “playing and laughing” with Nirvana songs which she describes as “Both simple enough, and enough to stroke the adolescent longing.” Before too long, she started writing her own songs and letting what cluttered her mind out through music.Ahmet Ertegün’s advice: One day when she was around 14-15, her father, “her biggest fan,” came home having acquired the address of Ahmet Ertegün’s Bodrum home. They recorded a demo together at home. In an envelope, they mailed İdil’s photograph and handwritten lyrics to Ahmet Ertegün’s house.A couple of months later, the phone rang. It was Ahmet Ertegün. After a short phone call, they met right before the Kenny Barron concert at Istanbul Jazz Festival in the first days of 2006. What remained with İdil after the short meeting was his advice to try out her songs in different genres as a songwriter, to always pay attention to production, and to have as many concerts as possible if she were to have a music career. What she heard that day stayed with her. She says, “For a moment, you feel understood. The stage experience is a moment where you are not alone, where you are happy. And that remained for me. That feeling in the first moment is still in my life.”More playful, more joyful:&nbsp;Closing the high school chapter by adoring bands like King Crimson and Gentle Giant, and singing in blues-rock bands, İdil says she put music in a place of fun and play.During her year abroad in Ireland during college, she made music a part of her life, and spent time in crowds who enjoy sharing, and more importantly, having fun together. She hitchhiked and sang her way through Ireland bars, and says she returned with this important knowledge, “My perspective on music and unrealistic ambitions that I associated with music disappeared pretty early on. And I avoid it becoming a job that envelops my life. For İdil, it is similar.She didn’t put music at the center of her life for a long time. But the time she has spent with it made her surround herself with different sounds and talented musicians. The motivation to see the traces she left behind and, to add to the common cultural heritage started İdil's solo career. Expanding her skills and musical range in different projects, İdil has always come back and designed her own sound world. Being able to look at music a little more flexibly and playfully, having teammates that you can experience excitement with are important things. In fact, when [that song] appears, you all love it together. That song is reunited with its family. I can’t get over Ayvalık.&nbsp;I set out on a Thursday about a month and a half ago. There was a farmers’ market in the streets of Ayvalık that day. Those streets I passed through multiple times throughout Başka Sinema Ayvalık Film Festival never seemed that crowded again. The days started with a walk on the beach, showings I was late to because I got lost in the streets, meeting up with the crowd at Kraft after seeing a film in the open-air cinema…I couldn’t hold on to the time that went by so fast in this slow city, we couldn’t.&nbsp;Not wanting the morning to come while chatting until it’s very late, yet still gladly opening your eyes early in the morning. Social media is just now entering our lives. My friend who started and managed Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts' (IKSV) social media says they will be abroad for the busiest week of the İstanbul Film Festival, and asks me to cover for them for a week. That is the first time I see behind the scenes of the festival that I had been excitedly following for a couple of years.On my first day “Come,” says Emre, “let me introduce you to Azize.” While we are waiting outside, I remember hearing her speak French on the phone, get off the phone, and swiftly solve the crisis of the person in her room. With that first impression alone, I was convinced that she knew everything about cinema and that she would be able to solve every problem. Over a decade and tens of meetings later, we became less formal.First meeting: We are at Ayvalık. We are sitting on the seaside in the garden of Ayvalık International Music Academy (AIMA). On our right, the silence of the cobblestone street, on our left, the Aegean blue. I see the previous four years flash and twinkle before her eyes – then the smile that conveys happiness and pride at the same time. I get the clearest, and perhaps the most satisfying answer of our entire chat. In a soft tone of voice, on an inhale, she says: “It’s not.”I have two more days at the festival. I love, connect to, and feel its joy even more intensely.Thank you: To Azize and the festival. Ayvalık Agrees With Us

Discovering Azize and the festival:&nbsp;Azize's relationship with Ayvalık started with a classic family summer house. When she got a little older, she parted ways with it until her return with Başka Sinema after spending many years with the Istanbul Film Festival, where she was the director for nearly ten years. “Ayvalık was a place I knew,” she says, “but when it comes to holding an event here, of course, you need to look at it from a different perspective.”It wasn’t hard to find the answer when they were searching for a place for the festival. Somewhere close to İstanbul, with a serious potential for audiences, able to fill the festival gap in the Aegean region, with notable architecture, history, and gastronomy, in fact even close to Mytilene Island for international ties. In the end, she says of the decision “Ayvalık agreed with us.” It brings with it the sincerity of being a festival without competition, where communicating with the audience is easier, and guests feel a sense of community. I think that as a viewer, it agreed with me too.Discovering with Azize: For our discovery journey, I ask her to pick a director who showed at the festival, and a film from the festival selection. She says&nbsp;“Do you wanna talk Kuosmanen?”&nbsp;and asks “You will watch it, right?” The movie she speaks of is on my list of course, the Grand Prix winner at Cannes Film Festival, Compartment No. 6.Despite the pandemic’s ongoing conditions, one of the two things Azize has set her mind to is returning the festival to Ayvalık after the mandatory pause. The second is to go to Cannes again. “The feelings it creates, the unexpected things,” she says of her Cannes favorite. The connection made between two strangers who dislike each other when they meet in a train compartment during a long journey isn’t the only unexpected thing in the movie.Just as he did with his previous film The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki (2016), Kuosmanen throws us a curve. He fills his film with small but nuanced moments. While everything progresses completely naturally, it activates your emotions, gives you hope, and hits the bullseye.&nbsp;Just like the festival itself.She says: “Don’t similar things happen in our lives? Don’t people suddenly surprise us when we connect with them? Don’t small, magical moments come to be when we are able to save ourselves from those patterns, corners, categories, really open ourselves up to someone, and feel ready to share?
