Greetings dear Piccolo readers, I am here again. This time I bring you Hope Larson's Mercury. I love Hope Larson. Alara asked me "Would you write an article for the Halloween issue?", and when she it, it was the first thing that came to my mind.I think the magical reality that Larson infuses into her stories without us noticing is just right for this issue. This book is worthy of this place with its creepy story that I am talking about. I love it so much, I hope you do too<h2 fr-original-style="" style="margin: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85); font-weight: 500; padding: 0px; box-sizing: border-box;">The story of two young girls separated for many years: Mercury</h2>Mercury is the story of two young girls tied to the same land but separated by many years. Actually, I guess it's more the story of a necklace, frankly, I'm not sure. The first of our two young girls is Josey Fraser, who lived in the 1850s. Josey lives a humble farm life. She spends her days with her family by milking cows, washing clothes, and picking fruit. Tara Fraser is a high school freshman in 2009. She's lived on the Fraser farm, which has belonged to the same family for generations—until recently. As you can see from their names, these two, who are related by blood, also have a common destiny.Meet the characters:&nbsp;The book begins with the transformation of the city over the years. Larson's detailed but heavily spaced lines make these panels eye-catching. Then we meet our first character, Tara. She likes running. In fact, it's more than just enjoying running, she's an athlete. She is running to the wreckage of a burned house. And we understand that this is her old house. Josey meets Asa while doing business near her home. According to Asa, she found gold on the land of their farm. And she wants to talk about it with their father. These years are just the beginning of the "Gold Rush" in North America. The father jumps into the scene with the excitement of the period and Asa suddenly becomes one of the main characters of the story. She also steals Josey's heart.Supernatural elements: Another main character is Ben. Ben and Tara look a little alike physically. Their hair is almost the same. This physical resemblance gradually causes the two to develop strong feelings for each other. Ben steals Tara's heart.&nbsp;Gradually, the supernatural elements of the story begin to appear here. Josey's mother began seeing ghosts. This trait is actually a legacy in the family and it comes down to Tara.As time goes by, this gold spree turns the lives of Josey and his family upside down. The stories she pulls out of her big roomy bag always touch my heart. Her drawings are especially great. I can stare at the faces she draws for hours without getting bored. She must be aware of this, as we see a lot of close-up facial expressions.You can see why she became a comic book superstar in this book, which she made in the middle of her transition from sweet and independent young adult writer to comic superstar.Mercury has everything I look for in a YA comic. A beautiful, calm but slightly sinister story, including romance and youthful fire. Mmmmhhh, delicious. I repeat, Hope Larson is an amazing illustrator.So if you want to feel cozy as well as you want to get spooked up, or if you just want to read a well-explained book, your next read should be Mercury. It can be very enjoyable to take an hour from your weekend and go visit a small town in Canada.

Do you remember how it make you feel?It's an almost impossible question to find the right answer to, but I've been digging through my childhood books from time to time so I was a little prepared. The first genre I was introduced to with books was of course educational books such as My First Dictionary,&nbsp;and when I looked again I was very surprised that the drawings on them were so engraved in my head.The drawings that I see and like right now and even my own illustration style are exactly like these. I think these books shaped my visual aesthetic. My favorite books always have contoured, solid-colored, undetailed illustrations.Also, when I was 5 years old, my mother bought me a book &nbsp;in the form of a parent's guide called Our Sexuality.&nbsp;The book informed the reader about sexuality to children of different ages, and they are explained with pictures.&nbsp;Again, the drawings in it are etched in my head. For example, I learned the concept of a gay couple from an illustration in the book. I still can't get over these images! They were very cute, indeed. For example, I would like to live in Finn and Jack's treehouse—it seems like it would be fun to make sandwiches and play games, spend time and sleep in that house.Being Princess Bubblegum and living in the Candy Kingdom is also a good idea. When you get bored, you can go from there to the Ice Kingdom and feed off of the chaos.Which universe still calls for you?I dream of a more gender-free, more vegan, more understanding and closer-to-nature future, and I am not hopeless. While trying to give a realistic answer, I realized that even this dream of mine seems fantastical.

Scavenger Hunt #6: İdil Keyşan

I'm a big fan of the non-verbal suspension-of-disbelief deal with games and books. So I will be presented with a logical framework and I trust that you will lure me in, and you offer me the plot you want to present and say, "Don't question it!"&nbsp;as long as you follow the rules, of course. What a brilliant deal, let's dive into this reality, I say from the bottom of my heart, then.What I admire more are those magical moments when this deal is fulfilled by all parties. If a fiction is passed on to me by being gamified or through somehow interacting with the reader, I get even more excited. So here comes to mobile applications, new reading habits and experiences, and the excitement of experiencing fiction from the screen. And so to today's book Leila and the Robot.Close-read of the day:&nbsp;I have a book written and dubbed by Berna Kahraman, and Nihan Yeşil handled the sound design and musical muscles on my screen. The story, illustrated by Doodlenerve, coexists within the Kidly app with its warm colors that happily remind us of&nbsp;<a fr-original-style="" href="https://steamcommunity.com/app/1102130?l=turkish" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="color: rgb(9, 9, 9); text-decoration: none; background-color: transparent; outline: none; cursor: pointer; transition: color 0.3s ease 0s; touch-action: manipulation; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: border-box;" target="_blank">Florence</a>, the winner of the 2019 BAFTA Gaming Award in Mobile Games.<h2 fr-original-style="" style="margin: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85); font-weight: 500; padding: 0px; box-sizing: border-box;">Productivity and partnership:&nbsp;Leila and the Robot</h2>I swipe the screen to the right, and meet Leila. A girl busily writing code for the classroom-robot in computer class. Then it's time for the Chinese gameplay. They don't stop, ever. It's not enough, homework are ahead this time! They have a video game for their math homework in front of them, and a Turkish homework and an English cartoon program.Let's see, how many activities are there?&nbsp;Five.&nbsp;One gets tired while writing, but there are two elements that appear like leitmotif. I think that in our speciesist world, robots are perceived from a positivist pen, and they are regarded to be things that do not get tired right away. At least that's my assumption.Outside of conventional narratives: In a standard narrative, I think we would expect the nonstop-working character to be the Robot character. "Let's do that too, come on, human being, is that making you tired too?"&nbsp;If I had read such reproaches, this would have been a completely different article. However, today we are meet with the story of Leila, an over-productive person, who isn't a part of a conventional narrative and is associated to be the mechanical one.<img src="https://images.aposto.com/2022/9/0/1666491914074.png" width="550" style="width: 100%; max-width: 550px; vertical-align: middle; border-style: none; position: relative; cursor: pointer; padding: 0px 1px; box-sizing: border-box;" ratio="1.42" fr-original-style="width: 100%; max-width: 550px;" fr-original-class="fr-draggable">🤖 Leila and the&nbsp;Robot ⚙️ Illustration: Doodlenerve<hr fr-original-style="" style="height: 0px; overflow: visible; border-bottom-style: none; clear: both; -webkit-user-select: none; break-after: page; box-sizing: border-box;">The human-robot dichotomy:&nbsp;Leila plays the piano as she plays, runs to her room to do her homework, but the Robot gets a little too hot and finally says, "The Robot worked hard!" A reality that he rebelled against was established. We're not dealing with a master-servant dichotomy here, which we often see in human-robot interaction, and it's irrelevant!A few questions I'm happy to ask: When the story deals with these dichotomies in a non-standard way, it also enables the reader to question stuff. For example, do we have to be so productive? Do we have to code, come home and then even remember when there's a specific time to play after doing our homework, and set our time management based on tasks? And how are we even supposed enjoy anything if everything is a task? Oh and, one more thing, does Leila have to function non-stop?Well, when through the partnership of the duo, who experienced Leila's reality together, combined with the narrative of the Robot that stopped working eventually after all those tasks, we indeed realize a very exciting result.Spoiler alert: At the end of the narrative, Leila realizes how tired she is when she sees that even the Robot that fell asleep did not wake up. They sleep together in peace. I'm excited for this narrative which subtly criticizes our community's approach to productivity through this friendship, and I thank the Robot—I don't want to forget that I have the right to sleep now when I'm a little too heated from working .

Chinese gameplay, interest in coding, the tennis habits... Where did you get your inspiration when creating Leila? Did you make use of a collective observation when choosing her interests, or is Leila someone you know?Berna (Writer and producer):&nbsp;When I was imagining Leila, I visited my own childhood in my head, and imagined what I care about when raising my children. All over the world, there are children running from activity to activity today. Why though? I'm questioning this. As adults, we must give children space for how to spend their time, creating opportunities for them to dream and play freely.Also, when I was a kid, I never complained even when it the thing was hard. Leila doesn't complain about all the hustle and bustle, and she does everything she does with ease, like a superhero. No matter what happens, she doesn't let anything spoil your fun. Her imagination is super wide. The Robot is also a product of Leila's imagination, like her answer to all this hustle and bustle.Nihan (Sound designer and producer): I was always a very quiet and observant child. I loved the time when I was by myself and I used to dream for hours and draw. But as I observe the parenting trends around me right now, I am very surprised. Children are not given time to be alone. They rush children from course to course and from activity to activity. I know children whose daily schedule is busier than mine!When Berna told me about Leila and the Robot, I immediately thought of all the Leilas I knew and I realized that we should start our adventure with this story immediately.Was there an ethos that you determined among yourselves while creating the book or shaping the protagonist? I was very happy because I did not see any gendered rhetorics whilst reading.B:&nbsp;When I observe my sons, regardless of their own life practices and what they are taught, I am astounded and stunned as they sponge on the gender roles that have been encoded for centuries. In other words, ideas about what women or men can and cannot do are formed very early.It is not a coincidence that while designing this story, the protagonist is a girl and the chosen activities are genderless. However, Leila enjoys coding! And this is to rewrite the gender codes in society.N:&nbsp;I was not involved in the writing of the story. As Berna just mentioned, this is one of the stories she wrote for her own children. But as I read the text, I connected with Leila. My life and work, too, have passed by constantly pushing the boundaries of accepted gender roles—and getting tired while pushing them. Actually, there should not be an imposition such as the gendering of interests, but unfortunately there is. Was your decision to criticize the "hustle culture" that we internalized with the Protestant morality and social media in our contemporary world consciously?B:&nbsp;As urbanized adults, we often run like Leila and unknowingly push our children into a similar pace. It's like there's an imposition to do this. However, free time is also very valuable.I just mentioned that the Robot is Leila's character's answer to the whole situation. It's like saying, "Not even a robot can withstand such a pace!" At the end of the story, Leila falls asleep before she can spend time with the Robot as she wishes. For example, my little boy questioned this situation a lot, "Mom, won't they play with the Robot?" And he complained about this.That's what we expect—let kids think about what they like, what they want to do. It also apparently deserves a praise since the drawings look so cute—so much pink was used in the book! In addition, the glittery parts catch the eye on the cover. The series, which leaves us in between the fairy school or the vampire school, stole the heart of Arya with the Pink Rabbit. Oh, and also: Are you a vampire or a fairy? The Black Rabbit, for example, tells Lorina that the people inside will turn out "good" and the people outside might eat her.&nbsp;Then we learn that there is a pig inside that eats everything. Lorina is asking for help for the people out there. The "people" need support; however, the reason why the people inside are busy is that they are eating at that time.Lorina continues to seek help—from elsewhere, of course. This is one of the first details that comes to Arya's mind about the book. “I like the way sentences were formed,”&nbsp;she says, bringing the book close to me. "They're long, and they tie together nicely. They also rhyme."
