• The Eurozone’s trade gap continued to widen as the common currency bloc recorded a trade deficit of €34 billion in July, compared with a deficit of €24.6 billion in June and a surplus of €20.7 in the same period a year ago, according to first estimates revealed by Eurostat Thursday.
• EU lawmakers passed new legislation that guarantees “decent” minimum wages for workers across the bloc, as inflation and soaring energy bills have left many households struggling to make ends meet. Under the new law, member states will have to guarantee their national minimum wage allows workers to lead a decent life, and are given two years to comply with the new law.
• US inflation rose more than expected in August as rising shelter and food costs offset a drop in gas prices, after a slowdown in the prior month, increasing the likelihood of another historically large interest-rate hike from the Federal Reserve. So-called core CPI, which excludes the more volatile food and energy components, surged 0.6% from July and 6.3% from a year ago, the first acceleration in six months on an annual basis.
