• The UK's competition regulator is investigating whether US chipmaker Broadcom’s $61 billion acquisition of cloud computing company VMware may substantially lessen competition, as tech deals continue to draw intense scrutiny. The Broadcom-VMware deal, announced in May, is the second biggest globally so far this year. The companies are also seeking EU antitrust approval.

• Greece is planning to ban the sale of spyware following a newspaper report that said more than 30 people, including ministers, had been under state surveillance via a phone malware called Predator. Spokesperson Giannis Oikonomou denied that the state was behind the spyware surveillance, calling the report "unfounded" and the government said will soon submit a bill to parliament banning the sale of spyware. via Reuters

• Broadcom agreed to acquire cloud computing company VMware in a $61 billion (€57bn) cash-and stock deal, massively diversifying the chipmaker’s business and almost tripling its software-related revenue to about 45% of its total sales. By the numbers: VMware shareholders will receive either $142.50 in cash or 0.2520 of a Broadcom share for each VMware stock. Broadcom will also assume $8 billion of VMware's net debt.

• Apple warned US senators that the suggested changes to the App Store in a bipartisan antitrust bill would ultimately cause consumers to be targeted with malware, ransomware, and scams, harming the privacy and security of iPhone users if the legislation becomes law.
