Factory Hammerbrooklyn really is a festival space. The magazines and the names behind them run the show. We go out there to find the creators who can't hide their excitement for what they produce nor their creative process. One afternoon, we meet Martijn in't Veld and Arjun Chadha on the floor.
Who? Martijn in't Veld
Publication/Publishing: Happy Potato Press, Publisher
Story: Martijn in't Veld, the creator of the Netherlands-based publishing house which I discovered thanks to their book One Ingredient Recipes, is high on my list. The reason for this is The New Yorker without The New Yorker magazine rather than the books they publish. The founder of the publishing house submitted illustrations to The New Yorker many times, but never received a response, so they published their own The New Yorker. The magazine, which has a picture of a single piece of fruit on each page, may look empty, but I think it is a great example of the fact that there is not one straight path to achieve one's dreams. Is it coincidental or inspiring that we get to find out about this magazine before The New Yorker team?
Who? Arjun Chadha
What do they do? Editor-in-chief
Publication/Publishing: Get Familiar Magazine, hip-hop culture magazine
Story: The most interesting thing about the creator of this magazine, which focuses on hip-hop culture, is that they left a career working in popular tech companies to approach the magazine as a product and to take care of its continuous development. Chadha defines writing as a kind of engineering job. In addition to their writing techniques, the media ecosystem and the business models developed, the magazine differs from other publishers in that, unlike other editors, he is not motivated to defend their personal opinion. Chadha created Get Familiar as an interview magazine that goes after the people who can best explain the topic it focuses on and asks the right questions. We learned that the intention is to strike a balance between bringing in readers who have no connection to hip-hop culture and offering hip-hop fans a new perspective they have never seen before.
