Dieter Rams' House Reflects His Principles

The modest L-shaped bungalow where Dieter Rams and his wife Ingeborg Kracht-Rams have lived in Germany since 1971 has been put under protection by the Hessian Historic Monuments Preservation Office. Future generations will have the chance to read the Rams' manifesto and philosophy of "good design" through this building.

The unique twin house is located within the Roter Hang estate in Kronberg, which was designed to house Braun employees. Rams is undertaking the project in partnership with architect Rudolf Kramer after purchasing a small plot of land on the site.

Surrounded by Taunus woodlands, the house in Kronberg was built and furnished according to a design by Rams. Rams has lived in the house with his wife since 1971. In their home, the couple of courses used Vitsœ furniture systems designed by Rams. Rams lists the reasons for this choice as follows: Designing furniture that only he would like to have and getting to know them during daily use to better understand where they could be improved. In cases where the Vitsœ program was incomplete, they chose furniture from other designers with a similar point of view, such as the Thonet 214 chairs around the dining table or the Fritz Hansen stools at the table.
