Discovering Deniz: Remembering his childhood in the 90’s Ataköy, Bahçeşehir with parents who were relaxed enough to take a three-year-old to Terminator 2, he says “I love that childhood was like the wild west, that lunacy.” Deniz Tortum&nbsp;grew up with a family of doctors and their doctor friends. The stories he heard from his father who worked at Cerrahpaşa Hospital and the&nbsp;“hubbub of the environment”&nbsp;always intrigued him. Maybe, that’s why his first film I watched, Phases of Matter, wants to show us the unknown side of hospital corridors: “Starting the film was a very personal choice,”&nbsp;he says “I always wanted to describe a hospital in a way that looked at its simplicity, gossip and daily life, and that was not Grey's Anatomy, a dramatic movie or TV series."Music, poetry, cinema:&nbsp;His first feature isn’t Phases of Matter. Two years before that, he co-directed Anatolian Trip with Can Eksinazi. They followed Venus Music Peace Band on tour city to city. While watching this film, which I first thought would just be a road trip movie or just a music film, I see that it talks about the diversity of people in Turkey, unexpected similarities between people, and differences that can be taken for granted.On the other hand, in many of Deniz's previous projects and short films, I continue to see the interactions and exchanges between different branches of art that excite us at Duende. We talk about poetry and cinema, starting with his collaborations with Efe Murad on the films Earth and “Hatıralar Koridoru”, of whom he says "I learned a lot from him." He says that there is a re-construction of time and space in poetry and that temporal, spatial, and emotional impossibilities are forever being created. “Similarly, there is a state of conceptualizing unspoken concepts creating time-space impossibilities in the film, mostly by editing. I get anxious.He says: "Not liking a movie the first time you watch it, but loving it the second time around… Movies aren’t fixed objects, almost all of them are landscapes where some days are rainy and some are sunny. Both sun and rain are related to the state of the viewer, and each time it shows itself in different ways.”
