My mother used to read it to me. I love to read romance books like Normal People, People We Meet on Vacation, and Çalıkuşu! The main character is always a journalist or a writer in the books I read for fun these days—a 20-year-old who is trying to build up their career, life, and love life. This world also feels close to me. At the same time, reading the books of people who lived in New York in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s—such as Patti Smith, and Joan Didion—takes me to realities that I could never be a part of, but makes me go, “I would have fit so very perfectly.” Ideally, I can see myself there. And sometimes, I don't.
