There are people who could not find a place for themselves under the political party flags that filled Saraçhane—the heart of the protests that erupted following the arrest of the opposition’s presidential candidate and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. We are talking about a community that defies labels: people carrying ultranationalist symbols, people waving Turkish flags, people holding humorous, Gen-Z-style placards, and others whose signs read “Revolutionary children of conservative families”... But when the police crackdown began, this diverse group—one that requires a sociological explanation for how it came together—stood united.
