Erdoğan winks at new term

The Turkish president said in a speech this week: “As long as God grants us life and our nation approves, we will continue to serve Turkey and the Turkish nation.”

• The backstory: AK Party leader RecepTayyip Erdoğan was elected as PM in 2003 and served in that role until 2014. Unable to run for another term, he then ran for and won the presidency. A 2017 referendum granted the President extensive powers. Erdoğan was chosen for a second term in 2018, and a third term in 2023.
• Important note: There is a 2-term limit on the presidency, however Erdoğan supporters argued that the redefinition of the role in 2017 allowed Erdoğan a third term with the title. Erdoğan's insinuation that he may run for another term is understood to be anti-constitutional.
