Unable to run for another term, he then ran for and won the presidency. A 2017 referendum granted the President extensive powers. Erdoğan was chosen for a second term in 2018, and a third term in 2023.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">&nbsp;Important note:&nbsp;There is a 2-term limit on the presidency, however Erdoğan supporters argued that the redefinition of the role in 2017 allowed Erdoğan a third term with the title. Erdoğan's insinuation that he may run for another term is understood to be anti-constitutional.</li></ul>
