• Hydrogen fuel cell maker Loop Energy said on Sunday that its latest cell system can deliver better fuel economy than a diesel engine at current price levels. Chief Executive Ben Nyland said the new cell system addresses one of the main challenges of Hydrogen fuel cells and “delivers the economics that are needed for adoption today."

• BMW and Toyota aim to sell jointly-developed hydrogen fuel cell vehicles as soon as 2025, BMW sales chief Pieter Nota told Nikkei in an interview. The automakers have worked together before, jointly developing the iX5 Hydrogen based on BMW’s X5 SUV. Fuel cell cars use hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity, instead of an engine or a battery.

• Rolls-Royce will conduct ground trials to see if hydrogen can safely power a small aircraft. The UK engineering group will test the fuel on its civil and military engines this year, and on business jet engines later. The aviation industry is under pressure to limit carbon emissions as flight frequencies are returning to pre-pandemic levels. Hydrogen fuel tests are a part of Rolls-Royce’s research aiming at decarbonizing aviation.
