• Rolls-Royce announced it has successfully run an aircraft engine on hydrogen, a world aviation first that marks a major step towards decarbonizing air travel. • BMW is testing a burner that can operate on both gas and hydrogen in its paint shop in Leipzig. The burner is able to switch from hydrogen to gas or vice-versa while in use. The new development in collaboration with combustion technology firm Saacke aims at reducing carbon emissions in the production process, as carmakers are also looking to reduce dependence on Russian gas.

• The European Commission approved €5.2 billion in public funding by 13 EU member states aimed at boosting the supply of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, which is expected to unlock €7 billion in private funding for a total of 35 projects involving 29 companies.

• Hydrogen fuel cell maker Loop Energy said on Sunday that its latest cell system can deliver better fuel economy than a diesel engine at current price levels. Chief Executive Ben Nyland said the new cell system addresses one of the main challenges of Hydrogen fuel cells and “delivers the economics that are needed for adoption today."

• NASA once again delayed the start of its Artemis 1 Moon mission after engineers found and failed to fix a persistent leak in a liquid hydrogen connection point on the agency's next-generation Space Launch System super heavy-lift rocket on Saturday. • Amazon signed a deal with Plug Power to buy liquid green hydrogen from the hydrogen fuel cell maker. Green hydrogen is a flexible and zero-emission fuel that can be used for transportation and energy generation and is often named the future of energy. Plug Power will supply 10.950 tons of hydrogen to Amazon starting in 2025, which will replace grey hydrogen and other fossil fuels.

• Germany launched the world’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains, replacing diesel trains to work toward the goal of expanding the use of hydrogen as a clean alternative to fossil fuels. The 93-million-euro project in the state of Lower Saxony will operate on routes between some northern towns, and the trains will save 1.6 million liters of diesel fuel a year by using hydrogen produced with renewable energy.

• German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Canada for a three-day visit to meet with PM Justin Trudeau to discuss investment and partnership opportunities, including in the critical minerals and automotive sectors.
