I live in South East London but I’m from Leeds, with Roots in Dominica.

I have recently found inspiration at Orii Jam. The most exciting movement of young creative people in London. The future of London is in safe hands.

After living decades in London, I just discovered the joys of riding in a black Cab. The drivers are walking encyclopedias of the city.

My favorite hangout for a live gig is Koko Camden.

A Londoner you must meet Hannah Jones. Because she is a renaissance woman whose diverse output spans broadcasting, conducting and running an orchestra, live performance, exhibitions, film, writing and opera and she deserves so much more credit for it.

Only a true Londoner would know the difference between the overground and the train.

About music, Jumbi and Peckham

This city is known for its brimming cultural heritage in music, do you believe it’s still relevant in today’s London?

100% — more than ever. London is a melting pot of so many different cultures and in the last few years, people from underrepresented cultures have felt emboldened to celebrate their own music and recontextualize it for today. It’s so inspiring and exciting to see. London is constantly giving birth to new movements and I feel it leads the way in Europe.

What is a listening bar, how is Jumbi redefining the way we hear, feel the music?

A listening bar is a place  popularized in Japan where you go to quietly listen to recorded music. Talking isn’t allowed and you order via notes on a piece of paper. Jumbi isn’t a listening bar — It’s a hi-if rum shack. We celebrate the sounds and flavors of the Caribbean and we play music on a hi-fi sound system — but there’s no etiquette around the experience: dance, scream, sing along be moved by it. It’s as much about the music as it is the people. We just have one turntable so that the selectors slow it down and don’t feel inhibited by genres, rhythm or pace — we invite people to listen to each song at a time, more deeply but the Jumbi spirit is mischievous, disruptive and playful.

Why is Jumbi located in Peckham, how the neighborhood connects with Jumbi’s soul?

This has been my home for 15 years. It couldn’t be anywhere else. Jumbi’s soul is Peckham, and much like it’s namesake folkloric Spirit — that spirit is influenced by it’s journey from Africa to the new world and now back to London.

Do you have a favorite record shop? What makes this place unique?

Alans in North Finchley is part key cutting shop, part record store, run by one man: Alan. It quietly has some of the best records in the city.
