The book “The Music of Imagined Turkey” is one of the leading investigations into music from Turkey in Germany, particularly the era up until the 1990’s. The result of eight years of comprehensive field studies, this book remains one of the most important resources in the field despite the twenty years that have elapsed. We are delighted to share the story in short of Martin Greve, the German musicologist who has been a resident of Istanbul for many years.

In the following article, you’ll be reading about the adventures of Cem Karaca, a pioneer of the Anatolian rock movement, in Germany. That adventure also has a little-known fruit: we’re happy to share with you the story of the German-language album Die Kanaken, enriched by our interviews with witnesses to the era.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the workforce agreement between Turkey and Germany. At istanbulberlin, we will be reading this history via music with our project #60JahreMusik. In the first phase of the project, we will be publishing an article series, video, and written interviews along with two events one in Istanbul and the other in Berlin. As Ali Ekber Aydoğan, more widely known as Derdiyoklar Ali, passed away on May 14th, we decided to publish our interview with him before planned.
