There are people who could not find a place for themselves under the political party flags that filled Saraçhane—the heart of the protests that erupted following the arrest of the opposition’s presidential candidate and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. We are talking about a community that defies labels: people carrying ultranationalist symbols, people waving Turkish flags, people holding humorous, Gen-Z-style placards, and others whose signs read “Revolutionary children of conservative families”... But when the police crackdown began, this diverse group—one that requires a sociological explanation for how it came together—stood united. We asked the protestors, who now share a voice and a set of concerns: What brought you to the streets?

Saraçhane’yi dolduran flamalar altında kendine yer bulamayan, o güne kadar oradaki siyasi görüşlerle aynı odada bile bulunmamış insanlar var. Etiketlenemeyecek bir topluluktan söz ediyoruz. Enver Paşa’nın resmini taşıyanlar, Türk bayraklarıyla gelenler, “Gözaltı mı? Benimki Lancome” ya da “Muhafazakar ailelerin devrimci çocukları” pankartları… Fakat polis müdahaleye başladığında bu biraraya nasıl geldiği sosyolojik izaha muhtaç grup tek vücut oluyor. Başka bir sese, başka kaygılara ve başka tür bir umutsuzluğa sahip olan sokaklardaki insanlara sorduk: “Neden alandasınız?”
